Artist Statement

Materializing from the wall, the scale of these pieces confront and reference the body. Using a tracing of my physical form, I created variations in shape and color to consider different versions of the self. Mined from memory, the subtle hues reminisce on periods of my life. The illuminated interior reflects on inner knowing, our intuition, the intangible constant which guides us. Each color references aspects of my own development; innocent peach, sprouting green, reflective blue, and passionate pink. The hues are de-saturated to create an emanating effect in space, relating to the ever-emerging self.

This work was impelled by a method of therapy called Lifespan Integration, which integrates neural structures and firing patterns throughout the body-mind, and across the lifespan. The process of conceptualizing was a combination of play and self-inquiry, and at the outset, writing was the main tool of discovery. Beginning with simple sketches, I translated them into digital designs for fabrication by a CNC machine. The machine was programmed to precisely cut plywood into the façade pieces of the sculptures. From that point, I assembled and fabricated each one by hand. They are painted different monochromatic hues with every layer slightly increasing in tonal value from the wall. LED lights are housed in their core, shining through acrylic.

While certain aspects of the self endure, others evolve over time. We exist in a state of flux, navigating the non-linear cycle of healing, revisiting aspects to integrate and grow. Who we are is not fixed, it is accumulative yet transient. As individuals, we encompass vast complexities and contradictions, evolving through introspection, experiences, and deliberate intention. We contain multitudes.
